The Resurrection: Claim, Evidence, and Interpretation

Separating the historical data (early testimony, the empty-tomb tradition) from the theological conclusion that it was a divine act.

The earliest written resurrection report (1 Corinthians 15:3–5) preserves a creed scholars date to within a few years of the events, naming specific witnesses. Historically, one can establish that the earliest followers sincerely believed they had encountered the risen Jesus and were willing to suffer for it. That is a historical claim. Whether the best explanation is a bodily resurrection (a theological interpretation) or a naturalistic alternative is where evidence underdetermines the conclusion and worldview enters. An honest account states the data, names the strongest competing explanations fairly, and labels the leap to 'God raised him' as theological interpretation rather than proven fact.
