Storms & Disasters Life-saving
Flash Flood Survival
Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down; 12 inches can float a car. Flash floods rise in minutes.
What to do
- 1Move to higher ground immediately — do not wait to see how high it gets.
- 2Never walk or drive through flowing water; if your car stalls in rising water, abandon it and get to high ground.
- 3Avoid storm drains, canals, and low crossings during heavy rain.
- 4If trapped in a building, go up — but not into a closed attic; get to the roof if water keeps rising.
- 5Signal rescuers with light, color, or noise.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Driving around barricades
- Letting kids play near swollen creeks
- Assuming a familiar road is safe
Good to know
- Keep a window-breaker/seatbelt-cutter in every vehicle.
- Camp and park away from dry washes — they flood without warning.
