Heat & Drought
Working & Exercising in Heat
Acclimatize, time it right, and watch your buddies — heat illness sneaks up during exertion.
What to do
- 1Schedule hard work/exercise for early morning or evening.
- 2Build up heat tolerance over 1–2 weeks; don't go all-out on the first hot day.
- 3Take shade breaks, drink on a schedule, and add electrolytes.
- 4Use the buddy system — watch each other for confusion, stumbling, or stopping sweating.
- 5Stop at the first sign of heat illness; cool down before it escalates.
Common mistakes to avoid
- 'Powering through' dizziness or nausea
- No breaks or fluids
- Heavy dark clothing
Good to know
- Acclimatization is real — the same heat is far safer after a week of gradual exposure.
