Cold & Freezing Life-saving
Winter Car Kit & Stranding
A car stuck in a winter storm becomes a shelter. Stay with it, stay warm, and stay seen.
What to do
- 1Stay in the vehicle — it's shelter and far easier for rescuers to find than a person on foot.
- 2Run the engine ~10 minutes per hour for heat; crack a window and keep the EXHAUST PIPE CLEAR of snow (CO risk).
- 3Bundle in blankets/extra layers; move arms and legs to keep blood flowing.
- 4Tie something bright to the antenna and turn on the dome light at night to be seen.
- 5Conserve phone battery; send your location and sit tight.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving the car to find help in a blizzard
- Running the engine with a blocked exhaust
- Running out of gas with no plan
Good to know
- Keep the tank above half in winter and tell someone your route and ETA.
