'Detox': Myth, Marketing, and the Real Thing

Separating genuine detoxification physiology from the cleanse-and-clay industry built on top of it.

'Detox' is one of wellness's most abused words. THE REALITY [Wellness education]: your liver, kidneys, gut, skin, and lungs detoxify continuously and effectively — and you support them by sleeping, hydrating, eating fiber and cruciferous vegetables, moving, and not overloading them with alcohol, smoke, and ultra-processed food. THE MARKETING [be skeptical]: most 'detox' teas, foot pads, clays, charcoal cleanses, and juice protocols don't remove named toxins in any measured way; some are simply laxatives or diuretics (you lose water, not 'toxins'), and a few are actively risky — activated charcoal and bentonite bind your medications and nutrients, charcoal/clay 'cleanses' can cause constipation and (for some clays) heavy-metal exposure, and aggressive juice fasts can harm. WHERE EARTH PRODUCTS GENUINELY HELP: specific, narrow uses — activated charcoal in actual emergency poisoning (hospital), Epsom-salt soaks for sore muscles, bentonite as a topical mask. The honest rule: support the organs that already do the job, be deeply skeptical of anything sold to 'flush toxins,' and remember that real toxin exposure (lead, mold, etc.) is a medical issue, not a tea. Educational only.
