Controlling Reality by Controlling Language

How euphemism, redefinition, and Newspeak shrink the range of thinkable thoughts.

Orwell saw that if you can narrow language, you can narrow thought: a concept without a word is hard to hold. Power routinely reshapes vocabulary — euphemisms launder unpleasant realities ('collateral damage'), redefinitions move goalposts, and loaded labels pre-decide arguments before they begin. Arendt described totalitarianism's deeper aim: not to make people believe a particular lie, but to destroy the very distinction between true and false, leaving a population that can no longer judge. The defenses are old-fashioned: insist on plain words, ask people to define their terms, restore the concrete reality behind abstractions, and protect the freedom to say 'two plus two equals four.' Clarity of language is a civic, even spiritual, discipline.
