Extreme Cold-Weather Kit
Cold kills fastest of all the extremes. This kit keeps you dry, insulated, and able to make heat.
What to do
- 1Prioritize staying DRY — wet kills in the cold; pack waterproof shells and spare dry socks/gloves.
- 2Layer system: wicking base, insulating mid (wool/down), wind/water shell.
- 3Carry redundant fire and a way to melt snow for water.
- 4Insulate from the ground with a closed-cell pad.
- 5Add chemical warmers for hands, feet, and core in a pinch.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Cotton clothing (it kills when wet)
- Eating snow without melting it (drops core temp)
- Sweating under too many layers
Good to know
- Keep one set of dry sleep clothes you NEVER wear during the day.
