DIY Water Filter

A field filter clears sediment and improves taste — but it does NOT make water microbiologically safe by itself.

A note of discernment

A common dangerous myth: a sand-and-charcoal filter does NOT kill germs. Treat the water afterward — clear is not the same as safe.

What to do
  1. 1Layer (top to bottom) in a bottle/cloth: cloth, then fine sand, then coarse sand, then charcoal, then gravel.
  2. 2Pour cloudy water through; it comes out clearer and better-tasting.
  3. 3ALWAYS finish by boiling, using a rated filter, or chemical treatment to kill pathogens.
  4. 4Use crushed charcoal from a clean wood fire (not briquettes) for odor/taste.
  5. 5Discard and rebuild when flow slows or it smells off.
Common mistakes to avoid
  • Believing DIY filtering makes water safe to drink
  • Using barbecue briquettes (chemicals)
