Storms & Disasters Life-saving

Earthquake Response

Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Most injuries come from falling objects and from trying to move during shaking.

What to do
  1. 1DROP to your hands and knees before the quake knocks you down.
  2. 2COVER your head and neck under a sturdy table; if none, against an interior wall away from windows.
  3. 3HOLD ON to your shelter until shaking stops.
  4. 4After: expect aftershocks, check for gas leaks (smell/hiss — shut off and leave), and wear shoes against broken glass.
  5. 5If near the coast and shaking is strong or long, move to high ground — a tsunami may follow.
Common mistakes to avoid
  • Running outside during shaking
  • Standing in a doorway (modern doorways aren't safer)
  • Using elevators afterward
Good to know
  • Secure tall furniture, water heaters, and heavy shelves to studs — most quake injuries are preventable.
  • Know how to shut off your gas and water.
