Storms & Disasters Life-saving
Earthquake Response
Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Most injuries come from falling objects and from trying to move during shaking.
What to do
- 1DROP to your hands and knees before the quake knocks you down.
- 2COVER your head and neck under a sturdy table; if none, against an interior wall away from windows.
- 3HOLD ON to your shelter until shaking stops.
- 4After: expect aftershocks, check for gas leaks (smell/hiss — shut off and leave), and wear shoes against broken glass.
- 5If near the coast and shaking is strong or long, move to high ground — a tsunami may follow.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Running outside during shaking
- Standing in a doorway (modern doorways aren't safer)
- Using elevators afterward
Good to know
- Secure tall furniture, water heaters, and heavy shelves to studs — most quake injuries are preventable.
- Know how to shut off your gas and water.
