Wildfire Evacuation

Wildfires move faster than people expect, especially uphill and with wind. Leave early; things are replaceable.

What to do
  1. 1Pack a go-bag and keep your car backed into the driveway, fueled, with valuables loaded.
  2. 2When evacuation is advised, GO — don't wait for an order.
  3. 3Wear cotton/wool (not synthetics that melt), long sleeves, and an N95 for smoke.
  4. 4Close (don't lock) windows and doors, shut off gas, and turn on exterior lights so firefighters can see your home.
  5. 5Follow designated routes; have a backup route in case roads close.
Common mistakes to avoid
  • Waiting for a mandatory order
  • Driving through heavy smoke without lights
  • Returning before officials clear the area
Good to know
  • Create defensible space: clear leaves/brush within 30 feet of the house year-round.
