First-Aid Kit Essentials
Most emergencies start small. A stocked kit plus basic training handles the common injuries and buys time for the serious ones.
What to do
- 1Build for bleeding, burns, wounds, sprains, and allergic reactions.
- 2Add a tourniquet and trauma dressing for serious bleeding — and learn to use them.
- 3Include personal meds, allergy meds, and any prescriptions.
- 4Take a basic first-aid/CPR course — skills matter more than the box.
- 5Check expirations twice a year and restock after use.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Owning gear you can't use
- Letting meds expire
- No plan for severe bleeding
Good to know
- For life-threatening bleeding: direct pressure, then a tourniquet high and tight — and call for help.
